Historic Route 66
Vega sits on the Mother Road west of Amarillo. I-40 carries the through traffic now. The old alignment still cuts the town, and the highway is why these houses exist.

The town
Vega on the high plains
Named for the Spanish word for meadow. Population under a thousand. School colors black and Vegas gold. Mascot the Longhorns. Wind on the horizon. The square still holds.
Courthouse square
Oldham County moved its seat from Tascosa to Vega in 1915. The courthouse on Main and US 385 is still the center of town — grid streets, a few blocks of houses, then pasture.
Magnolia Gas Station
Built in 1924 by Col. J. T. Owen, restored with help from the National Park Service. A picnic stop and a reminder that Vega was built for people passing through and people who stayed.
Wind country
The high plains around Vega are cattle country first, then wheat, then turbines. On a clear day the farms on the horizon are part of the skyline, not a novelty.
