Oldham County, Texas Panhandle
Vega is a prairie town that kept the square.
Vega is the county seat of Oldham County, about thirty miles west of Amarillo on Interstate 40 and Historic Route 66. The name is Spanish for meadow. The population is under a thousand. The grid is short. Pasture starts where the last street ends.
The town was surveyed in 1903 for the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Texas Railroad, later the Rock Island. Ranchers Pat and John Landergin helped settle it. In 1915 Vega won a five-year fight with Tascosa for the county seat. The 1915 courthouse on Main Street still runs the county. A 1931 fire took six buildings west of the square and pushed the town into a proper water system.
Route 66
When U.S. 66 came through, Vega built tourist courts, cafes, and stations for people crossing the Panhandle. I-40 later took the through traffic. The old alignment is still here. Photographers stop for the Magnolia Gas Station at 904 Main — built in 1924 by Col. J. T. Owen as the town’s second station, closed for decades, then restored by the city with a National Park Service Route 66 grant. It is a visitor stop now, not a pump.
The square and the school
Downtown is the courthouse, a few businesses, and houses within a walk. Vega ISD is the Longhorns. Colors are black and Vegas gold — the same palette this site uses because that is the town, not a marketing invention. Friday nights in the fall still matter here.
Wind and cattle
Oldham County was open-range cattle country — LS, LE, XIT country — before it was a highway town. The high plains still run livestock and wheat. Wind farms on the horizon are part of the working landscape. Elevation is about 4,000 feet. The sky is the largest thing in town.
